Description

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”justi”]

Que Zui Ya Bao reveals at first sight that this is no ordinary tea. The name “Que Zui” means “Sparrow’s Beak”, referring to the distinctive pointed shape of its buds. Their green, reddish and purple hues are strikingly different from the pale Bai Ya Bao – and the character of the two teas in the cup is equally distinct.

Unlike traditional leaf teas, Que Zui Ya Bao is made from the closed shoot buds of the tea tree. These are the buds from which new shoots and leaves would later develop. They are harvested before opening and then gently dried, preserving their distinctive shape, natural colours and unusual aromatic character.

Because of its Yunnan origin, Que Zui Ya Bao can sometimes be found among pu-erh teas. Based on its processing, however, it is more commonly classified as a white tea, although its unusual raw material means that it does not fit perfectly into either traditional category. This ambiguity is part of what makes the world of Ya Bao so fascinating.

Its infusion is clear and pale yellow, while the flavour is remarkably distinctive. Alongside a gentle natural sweetness, woody and spicy aromas take centre stage, accompanied by subtle notes that are difficult to define. It does not resemble the familiar floral and fruity character of classic white teas: its unusual flavour is difficult to compare with almost any other tea. It continues to evolve over successive infusions while retaining its characteristic spicy nature.

Another fascinating feature is that the compact shoot buds do not unfold in hot water like conventional tea leaves. Even after 8–10 infusions, they remain surprisingly closed and compact, while continuing to release new nuances into the cup.

Que Zui Ya Bao is particularly interesting if you are already familiar with the pale Bai Ya Bao. Although both belong to the unusual world of Ya Bao teas, their appearance and flavour are remarkably different. Compared with the softer, more floral character of Bai Ya Bao, Que Zui reveals a fuller, woodier and distinctly spicier side of Yunnan tea.

Preparation

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”justi”]

Preparing Que Zui Ya Bao is slightly different from what you might expect from a classic white tea. Its compact buds withstand many infusions and reveal their character best through a series of short steeps.

Use 6–8 g of tea per 150–250 ml of soft or filtered water. A porcelain or glass teapot works particularly well.

Use water at 90–95 °C. For the first 2–3 infusions, a steeping time of 10–15 seconds is sufficient. Gradually increase the steeping time with subsequent infusions. Its brewing rhythm is therefore closer to the repeated short infusions often used for pu-erh than to the longer steeping typically associated with classic white teas.

It is worth following the tea through 8–10 infusions. As the infusions progress, the initial gentle sweetness gives way to increasingly pronounced woody, spicy and difficult-to-define nuances. While the flavour continues to evolve from cup to cup, the unusual buds remain remarkably compact and closed.
